Location: Birmingham (SCC operate hybrid working, which comprises of a mix of office and home working)

Role purpose: The Financial Accountant plays a crucial role in delivering accurate, timely financial reporting while maintaining a strong financial control environment. This role leads key month‑end and year‑end activities, manages statutory reporting requirements, and ensures the integrity of the balance sheet through rigorous balance sheet reconciliations and consistent adherence to internal controls. It is well-suited to individuals who enjoy problem-solving, driving process improvements, and working collaboratively with colleagues across the business.
Key responsibilities:
- Financial accounting and reporting
- Monthly accounting activities: Contribute to monthly accounting tasks, including preparing journal entries and maintaining accurate financial records.
- Month-end and year-end close: Support close processes by preparing journals, reconciling key accounts, analysing variances, and ensuring all deadlines are met.
- Compliance with FRS 102: Ensure all financial activities comply with FRS 102 and internal accounting policies.
- Year-end support: Assist with year-end close activities.
- Statutory reporting: Support the preparation of statutory financial statements and liaise with external auditors during the audit process.
- Balance sheet and controls
- Balance sheet ownership: Take ownership of key balance sheet reconciliations, ensuring accounts are fully reconciled, substantiated and risks or opportunities are identified early.
- Intercompany reconciliations: Lead on intercompany reconciliations and group reporting submissions, ensuring accuracy and timely resolution of differences.
- Balance sheet integrity: Monitor the balance sheet by reviewing key accounts and analysing movements.
- Business support and collaboration
- Cross-functional collaboration: Work closely with the wider finance team and operational teams to share financial accounting knowledge, drive process improvements and provide insight that supports decision-making.
- Budgeting and forecasting: Support budgeting and forecasting cycles as required.
- Process improvement and systems
- Process optimisation: Identify opportunities to streamline processes and drive automation.
- Financial controls: Monitor and strengthen financial controls across key processes, ensuring compliance and reducing risk.
- Continuous improvement: Contribute to ad-hoc tasks and ongoing continuous improvement initiatives within the finance function.
Skills and experience:
- Fully ACA or ACCA qualified.
- Experience in financial accounting, management and reconciliations of balance sheets, preparation of statutory accounts is desirable.
- Strong technical accounting knowledge and understanding of financial reporting standards
