Role: Configuration Engineering Lead

Location: Birmingham (SCC operate hybrid working, which comprises of a mix of office and home working)

Contract Type: Permanent

Salary Package: £29,727 plus large company benefits, a broad flexible benefits scheme, and 2 paid-for volunteering days a year

Hours: 14:00 - 22:00 (30 minutes Break), Monday – Friday

Role purpose:
To act as the senior technical authority within configuration engineering, providing expert hands-on support, technical governance and oversight across configuration activities. The role is responsible for ensuring high standards of technical delivery, leading on complex technical issues, defining and maintaining configuration standards, and supporting the development of Configuration Engineers through coaching, mentoring and knowledge transfer.
 
Key responsibilities:
  • Act as the lead technical authority for configuration engineering activities, providing direction, assurance and subject matter expertise across services, projects and operational delivery.
  • Carry out and oversee advanced configuration, build, imaging and deployment activities, ensuring work is completed in line with documented standards, customer requirements and agreed industrial processes.
  • Lead the resolution of the most complex technical issues on the day, taking ownership of problem diagnosis, root cause analysis and permanent corrective actions where required.
  • Provide technical oversight for configurations and support activities, ensuring outputs meet customer-specific requirements, manufacturer instructions and internal quality expectations.
  • Serve as the escalation point for Configuration Engineers and wider engineering teams on technical matters, and ensure non-conformances, risks or recurring issues are identified, addressed and escalated appropriately.
  • Support the design and implementation of technical solutions, ensuring configuration approaches are practical, controlled, scalable and aligned to factual delivery possibilities.
  • Assure the accuracy of build data, technical records and status updates in relevant business systems to support traceability, reporting and operational control.
  • Mentor, coach and train Configuration Engineers and other team members to build technical capability, improve quality, and develop succession strength within the team.
  • Review technical outputs, provide constructive feedback and proactively support colleagues where required to help maintain service levels, operational efficiency and quality standards.
  • Maintain advanced knowledge of relevant platforms, tooling, hardware, software and associated processes, including server technology where required, acting as the most experienced technical resource within the function.
  • Ensure all work is completed in line with company policies, security requirements, customer standards, ISO processes and Health & Safety obligations, maintaining a safe and controlled working environment.
  • Contribute to service improvement, supporting the successful introduction of new technologies and ways of working.
  • Carry out any other reasonable duties consistent with the seniority and technical nature of the role.
  • Preferably a Health and Safety representative of the department. This is inclusive of being trained internally for the following; Emergency First Aid at Work, On Site Fire Marshall and Spillages.
Skills and experience:
  • Demonstrable experience in configuration engineering or a closely related technical engineering environment, with proven capability operating at an advanced or senior level.
  • Strong technical knowledge across relevant hardware, software, build, deployment and support processes, with the credibility to act as the lead technical authority.
  • Proven ability to mentor, coach and develop less experienced engineers, supporting both day-to-day delivery and longer-term capability growth.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with experience resolving complex technical issues and driving root cause resolution.
  • Able to define standards, review quality of technical output and maintain accurate technical documentation and process controls.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to translate technical detail into clear guidance for colleagues, managers and customers.
  • Relevant technical certifications or equivalent practical experience appropriate to the technologies and services supported by the role.
  • Self-motivated, highly organised and able to work with a high degree of autonomy while providing technical leadership to others.
